PENSACOLA (Florida). According to authorities, a Florida man killed his Norwegian son-in-law after a cruel birthday joke was made Tuesday night.
Santa Rosa Sheriff Bob Johnson stated that Richard Dennis, a 61-year old landlord, knocked on his front door around 9:30 PM and then went outside to chase another relative away from a dispute.
Two hours later, Christopher Bergan, 37, flew in from Norway for Dennis’ birthday surprise and arrived at the Gulf Breeze home.
Sheriff Johnson stated that Dennis heard the same sound at 11:30 PM. This time, it was at the back door. He grabbed his semi-automatic pistol.380 and turned on the porch lighting.
Dennis was searching for the source of the noise when Bergan leaped out of the bush and made a “growling sound” that shocked his father-in-law.
“Mr. Johnson stated that Dennis fired one shot and hit Mr. Bergan instantly. “When our deputies arrived they already had towels from the man trying to stop the bleeding.”
Further investigation revealed that the shooting had been “completely accidental”. No charges were expected.
Dennis’s actions were not predicted by the sheriff, despite what he had seen earlier in the evening.
Johnson stated that Johnson believed it was a tragic accident that shouldn’t have happened. Johnson said, “Anyone who is religious should pray for this family. It’s horrible. I cannot imagine what they are going through.
