According to wildlife authorities, two men from West Palm Beach enjoyed the ride with the injured owl.
Wildlife state officials don’t laugh. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission says that the men could be charged with capturing a great-horned owl.
Amy Keith, Bush Sanctuary’s director of animal care, stated that “[the video] drives me crazy.”
This video was uploaded on Facebook on March 16. The video shows two men driving with an owl while dazed. According to the man who posted the video, he found the owl with a friend while driving through West Palm Beach.
The message states, “At three o’clock in the morning, we are drunk and ready for this thing to go home and eat. Just found it on the roads.”[Popular on SunSentinel.com] City plans are disrupted as downtown Delray Beach receives begging complaints ”
The video shows the driver holding an owl and loud music playing. In the center console is a bottle that can be described as alcohol in video captions and comments. They can be heard laughing about how much they want to ride the bird.
Liz Barraco, a spokeswoman for the Fisheries and Wildlife Commission, stated that the agency has begun an investigation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. She could not comment on whether or not the agency was able to speak with the men involved in this incident, and she did not know if any charges could be brought.
After receiving a tip in California, Captain Dave Walesky of Palm Beach County Conservation and Animal Control said that he informed the state agency about the video. He stated that he received an email from the Florida Animal Control Association with a link for the video.
He stated that the great-horned owl was a protected species and that the government agency accepted responsibility. They also notified Bush Sanctuary, which takes in injured animals like owls. Kite stated that the reserve is working with authorities in order to find those responsible.
She claimed that officials had told her they had reached the man behind the camera. She stated that the men released her owl the following day.
She said, “We have never seen or touched an owl.” “The guy in the video said that he let go.”
Officials believe that the owl sustained injuries when it was struck by a vehicle. Kite stated that she was shocked to discover that the injured owl is still there, scared and hurt.
She said, “Very often, we get these animals and there is no one who can blame.” This case is different, because we know the names of these people but can’t reach the animal to save it. I’m even more upset because an animal was hit by a vehicle and will not get the help it needs. “
