TAMPA, Florida (WCTV) — A Florida man confessed in a Tampa courtroom Wednesday he smuggled over 20 aquatic lizards from the Philippines, the Justice Department said in a statement.
The Interior Ministry’s Fish and Wildlife Service has teamed up with the Justice Department at Operation Sounds of Silence, which intends to catch and indict anyone involved with the illegal trade in protected species.
According to court records, he worked from January to December 2016. The lizards, frequently sold for beautiful layouts, were filled into socks and taped with duct tape, prosecutors say. They were then put in electronics and sent commercially under false labels.
A worker from Massachusetts will get the lizards and send them to Akram. Operation Sounds of Silence is a continuous endeavor.
